How to Care for Your Tote Bag So It Lasts a Lifetime

Here at Santa Racla we care about Tote Bags, and if you are reading this you probably care too!
Our Tote Bags are made to last, but even the strongest bag needs a little care to stay beautiful year after year.

Here’s how to care for your Santa Racla tote bag properly

Understand the Material

Not all totes are the same. A polyester tote may resist stains but loses charm quickly; an organic cotton tote bag, like those we craft at Santa Racla, is a living fiber that softens with age, breathes, absorbs, and remembers.

Washing Your Cotton Tote Bag

Gentle washing keeps the fabric strong and the print vivid.

1. Hand wash whenever possible.
Fill a basin with cold or lukewarm water and a mild, eco-friendly detergent. Avoid bleach or harsh chemicals — they weaken natural fibers and fade the artwork.

2. If you REALLY have to machine-wash, choose a delicate cycle, cold water, and turn the bag inside out. This protects both the print and the texture.

3. Never tumble dry.
High heat shrinks cotton and damages the shape. Instead, hang it flat or lay it on a clean towel to air dry naturally.

Stain Removal the Right Way

Treat stains early.
Dab (never rub) with a soft cloth and a small amount of natural soap. For persistent spots, use a mix of water and baking soda — an old-world trick that keeps the fabric bright without chemicals.

Remember: stains tell stories. A little imperfection is part of a tote bag’s soul.

Storage and Everyday Habits

+    Fold gently, don’t cram. Sharp folds can mark the fabric over time.

+    Keep it dry between uses; humidity encourages mold in natural cotton.

+    Avoid overloading. Even reinforced seams have limits, and caring means respecting them. Our bags have a maximum safe carry of 20 Kgs / 44 lbs, whish is a lot. Don't put 20 kgs on one shoulder, please.

+    Ironing: are you really ironing tote bags? Wow. Ok, just remember to:
+     turn it inside out to prevent the prints to get damaged
+     use a medium temperature (around 150–160 °C / 300–320 °F), and avoid steam directly on the print
+     if you want to be extra safe, place a thin cotton cloth or parchment paper between the iron and the fabric.

A simple routine extends the life of your bag more than any detergent ever could.

Why It Matters

Taking care of what you own is the most sustainable act of all.
Every extra year your tote lasts is 1+ less item in landfills, one less resource spent.
Sustainability begins at home — in the small gestures of preservation and respect.

At Santa Racla, we craft GOTS-certified organic cotton tote bags meant to be used, repaired, and loved. Their durability comes from quality; their longevity comes from care.

A Tote That Ages Beautifully

When you wash gently, store thoughtfully, and treat your tote with care, it doesn’t just last longer — it grows with you.
Its fibers relax, its colors settle, and its story deepens.
That’s the quiet magic of cotton: it endures, not despite time, but through it.
